The foundation of Juliusspital, or hospice, was set up in 1576 and endowed by Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn of Würzburg. From the very beginning, the wine estate belonged to this foundation. The revenues generated by this estate went towards supporting the duties of the foundation dedicated to the common good. The foundation comprises a modern clinic with a palliative care unit and a foundation for the elderly, their care and securing them accommodation. The “Fürstenbau”, a palatial building, designed by the architect Antonio Petrini built in the Barock style with its historical cellar vaults, its garden pavilion and the fountain statues of Jacob van der Auvera, make the Juliusspital unique monument to art and culture at the heart of the city of Würzburg in the heart of the famous Franconian wine region.
